IWD2026 – Give to Gain

IWD2026 – Give to Gain

This International Women’s Day (IWD), we are reminded that progress is not passive; it is built through intentional action, shared responsibility and collective courage.

To give in this moment means to offer patience when dialogue becomes difficult, to share knowledge when myths persist and to stand firmly in defiance of dignity for all people. In doing so, we gain something powerful: stronger communities, more informed public conversations and a stronger foundation for lasting equality.

Globally, we are navigating a difficult and uncertain political landscape. Conversations about gender, rights and equality are increasingly polarised and the progress that we have collectively fought hard to achieve can sometimes feel fragile. Yet, resilience has always been a defining feature of women’s rights movements. It is the resilience to respond to hostility with empathy, to counter misinformation with research-based evidence and to transform exclusion into opportunities for deeper understanding. True progress is sustained when we centre facts, lived experiences and inclusive dialogue.

Our vision of gender justice is clear: feminism must be inclusive to be meaningful. The pursuit of equality cannot leave anyone behind. In Trinidad and Tobago, our systems still recognise only male or female genders. For many transgender and gender-diverse people, this means navigating daily life without full legal or social recognition. Creating truly inclusive spaces requires us to begin opening the door to change. Transgender and gender-diverse individuals are part of our communities and our families. When feminism embraces this diversity, it becomes more honest, more compassionate and, ultimately, more transformative.

There is no single place for resistance, nor does transformation happen overnight; it is ongoing and often happens within the very systems we are working to improve. Real progress happens across many spaces – policy rooms, workplaces, classrooms, communities and the everyday choices people make to challenge discrimination and uphold dignity.

The theme “Give to Gain” also speaks to the power of collective action. Gender equality is not just a women’s issue – it is a national development imperative. Through continued dedication and commitment, we gain the ability to continue advocating for safer spaces, stronger protections and greater opportunities for women and gender-diverse people across our society. The road ahead will require continued efforts, but it will also be shaped by the generosity of those who choose to give, whether through their energy, resources or unwavering belief in a more just, diverse and inclusive world.

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate the progress we have made, no matter how incremental it may seem. We acknowledge that the work towards equality remains unfinished. We also reaffirm our commitment to confronting the barriers that remain. We are reminded that every act of support, every voice raised for equality and every moment of solidarity contributes to something greater than ourselves. When we give to equality, we gain stronger communities, deeper understanding and a future where dignity and opportunity belong to everyone.
