#IDAHOBIT2026 – At the Heart of Democracy, Every Voice Belongs

This year’s #IDAHOBIT theme, “At the heart of democracy,” arrives at a critical moment globally and here at home in Trinidad and Tobago.Democracy is more than elections, laws, or institutions. At its core, democracy is about people — dignity, participation, justice, and ensuring that every person can live freely, safely, and equally under the law.

A society cannot truly call itself democratic while sections of its population remain excluded, targeted, or denied protection. For LGBTQIA+ people in Trinidad & Tobago, this reality remains painfully familiar. Beyond legal debates and courtroom arguments lies something deeply human: LGBTQIA+ people deserve equal dignity, protection, and justice.

The outcome of democracy should never be fear. No one should have to live invisibly to feel safe. No young person should face bullying, violence, rejection, or discrimination because of who they are.SLF believes democracy must work for everyone, not only the majority or the powerful, but ALL people, including those whose identities have historically been pushed to the margins.

Democracy demands courage: the courage to protect minority rights, uphold human dignity, and recognise that inclusion strengthens society. This #IDAHOBIT, we call on leaders, institutions, families, faith communities, and everyday citizens to reflect on what justice truly means.

Human rights cannot be conditional. Equality cannot be selective.

Progress begins when we choose empathy over fear, dialogue over silence, and humanity over division.
