Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials
“Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status. Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more. Everyone is entitled to these rights, without discrimination.”

Observed annually on December 10th, Human Rights Day commemorates the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This declaration enshrines the inalienable rights to which every individual is entitled. Human Rights Day reminds us that fundamental rights are not luxuries; they are essentials that we rely on every day, shaping our lives and dignity.
Human rights are often thought of abstractly, as lofty principles or legal jargon. But in reality, they are the very basics that allow us to live with dignity, safety, and freedom.
This year’s theme, “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials,” is incredibly relevant, especially for LGBTQ+ youth who may feel a growing sense of insecurity, discontentment and alienation in this period of political instability and unpredictability, and who often face challenges in seeing their rights respected as essential parts of daily life. For LGBTQ+ youth, these rights are not optional extras; they are a daily necessity.
Every individual deserves respect, equality, and the opportunity to live authentically without fear. Human Rights Day reminds us that essentials such as equitable access to healthcare, freedom of expression and education without discrimination must never be taken for granted. They require active protection and advocacy, especially in communities where LGBTQ+ rights are still under threat.
Support and inclusivity are all critical to making human rights real and tangible for all, particularly LGBTQ+ youth. When human rights are respected, our communities thrive, and we all share in creating a fairer, kinder world. When human rights are protected, it opens doors toward true equality and a greater understanding.
This Human Rights Day, stand with us in affirming that human rights are truly essential to everyday life. We must all work together to create safe spaces, challenge discrimination, advocate for justice, and support each other. Share stories, educate others, challenge discrimination, and support organisations (like SLF!) that uplift LGBTQ+ youth.
Your voice matters. Advocacy for human rights is not just a goal; it is a necessity that affects every aspect of life.
