Rooted in Resilience: Celebrating 14 Years of Advocacy
Today, we celebrate years of advocacy and community.
Fourteen years ago, SLF began with a powerful mission: to create safer, more inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA+ people. 14 years later, our mission remains unchanged. Inclusion is not optional; it is essential.
We began as a small but determined voice committed to inclusivity, anti-discrimination and suicide prevention for LGBTQI+ youth across Trinidad & Tobago. Today, we are proud to be an established, evidence-based voice in the national movement for equality and justice, rooted in resilience and rising in pride.
We celebrate this milestone in a complex and challenging landscape. The political and social landscape has evolved significantly over the years. Around the world and here at home, conversations about human rights, dignity, bodily autonomy and belonging are increasingly polarised. In a climate of polarisation and misinformation, our response has never been anger; it has been empathy, understanding, research-based evidence, lived experiences and unwavering compassion. We choose evidence. Research-based prevention. Data-driven advocacy.
Resilience is not simply surviving; it is continuing to show up, even when things are difficult. Resilience means action. It is choosing dialogue over division. It is building safer classrooms, advocating for inclusive school policies, advancing anti-discrimination protections, and supporting families and youth. with evidence-based tools, and holding institutions accountable. It is grounding our work in data, truth and humanity, even when the environment feels uncertain.
This milestone belongs to every supporter, volunteer, donor and partner who has walked this journey with us. Your time, trust, contribution and belief in our mission have made these past 14 years possible. Because of you, others have found hope. WE have found hope. Families have found understanding, and lives have been impacted in ways that statistics alone cannot capture.
Over the years, we have built programmes and partnerships aimed at creating safe spaces and expanding conversations. While we are incredibly proud of the impact that our work has on our community, we know that the work is far from over.
Fourteen years in, our resolve is clearer than ever: human rights are not negotiable. Our safety is not debatable. Our dignity is non-partisan. We will continue to push for inclusivity and diversity and we will not rest until every LGBTQI+ person feels safe, supported, and valued.
As we look to the future, we remain committed to growing stronger, expanding our reach and deepening our impact. With your continued support, we will keep advocating, educating and creating pathways to hope and healing.
Thank you for standing with us – then, now and into the future.
